DIY Cold Punge Spotlight: James' Stock Tank Plunge

Why did you decide to build a cold plunge?
The first time I tried it I felt amazing! I then started using the one at my local gym but got tired of scheduling appointments..so I decided to build one!
What is your typical routine in the plunge?
I try to do it first thing in the morning. Especially before working out. I keep my tub at 39 and will plunge between 5-10 minutes. I vary the time so my body doesn’t adapt. I like to do it in complete silence.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how much did you enjoy the process of building your cold plunge?
10! I enjoy building things and this was a unique thing to do. It requires a lot of planning!
What plan did you use?
I didn’t use a plan. I just looked at your YouTube videos and started building.
How long did it take, from start to finish?
Well I ordered parts and then took breaks..so probably 3 weeks. I didn’t know exactly what I needed so there was a lot of trips to Home Depot. Luckily your videos helped keep me on track.The chiller took the longest because it was backordered. If I had everything I needed..I think I could do it in 4 days.
Did you encounter any unexpected difficulties during the construction process, and if so, how did you overcome them?
The biggest issue was plumbing and what material/fittings to use.I eventually settled on Pex because it was the most versatile. Shark bites were really easy to use but the brass condensates really bad.
What pump, chiller, filter/ozone are you using?
I have a 1/2HP Penguin chiller with Danner 1200 pump. I used the ozone generator from your site and purchased the GE whole home filtration system from Home Depot. I also used the LED light from your website!
What parts/components were the most difficult to get your hands on?
By far the chiller! It took 6 weeks to get! Everything else was readily available.
How did the actual cost of building the cold plunge compare to your initial budget or expectations?
I was hoping to spend under $2k but ended up coming in at $2500. I decided to use black ship lap on the sides and it wasn’t cheap!
Any cost-saving tips for anyone looking to take on a DIY cold plunge?
Look in construction site dumpsters! I found all of my 2x4’s, pex pipe, and tyvex wrap in there!
Were there any time-saving techniques or recommendations that you uncovered throughout the process?
I found it best to build frame, add top, mount tub, and rough plumb the system before doing anything else. Having the top on and tub mounted made it really easy to flip it over and spray insulation. Use the tyvek as a container for the insulation!
Would you recommend the plans to other DIY'ers?
Yes! You do a great job of taking the guess work out of layout and materials needed! I often went back to the videos for insight!
Is there anything else you would like to add about your overall experience or any tips for future builders?
Mount your electrical high in case you have a water leak. Make sure all your piping is wrapped because the condensation is intense! Make an access point to your fittings. Especially the lower bulkhead and drain valve! Im glad i did!
