So... why build a cold plunge?  

I always wanted something to stretch my self-discipline and cold plunging does that for me.

How long did it take, from start to finish?

About 2 months. I just worked on it periodically in my free time.

I came up with my own custom lid design.

The convenience of being able to plunge at home at any given time.
