What makes ModTub different from other cold plunge companies out there?
We pioneered a whole new cold plunge using a super insulated, massive cooler so it's different from most things coming out that are bought and resold from overseas. Our biggest differentiators are:- Price - we have the best value cold plunge on the market. We use the same components of higher end models, but we charge 40% less than them.
- Modular - other companies are moving to these unreliable all-in-one pump, filter, and chillers, but these are failing at a rate of almost 30%. If one component fails, the whole thing needs to be replaced or repaired which is very tricky. All of our components are separate so if one thing has an issue, it can easily be swapped out.
- Superior insulation and durability
- We make these in Dallas, TX. My brother and I (mostly him) built the first couple hundred of these ourselves. Thankfully, we now have some help on the production side, but they're still made at our HQ in Dallas.
- Colors! Most other cold plunges on the market come in white or black, but we have 8 awesome colors that provide a unique look. We have several neutral options and then some colors that are vibrant and really pop.

How did ModTub get it's start?
I always start this story by bragging that I won my Fantasy Football league in 2018. From the Fantasy Football winnings, I bought this junky old hot tub off Craigslist for my wife and I's first house. This thing had a ton of issues that my father-in-law helped me fix up, and I really enjoyed working on it. I ended up selling that first hot tub once we got it fixed up to buy a nicer one, and I made good money on that refurbished tub. From there, I started refurbishing used hot tubs in my garage for fun. I enjoyed learning about the different models, the pumps, the filters, heaters, fittings, etc. It had elements of plumbing, electrical, woodwork - just all around great projects to tinker with and learn. Over the next two years, that little side hobby flipping hot tubs in my garage grew into a legitimate business. Especially fueled by the pandemic, the used hot tub market went crazy leading to massive growth for my used hot tub business.
After that used hot tub company, Regen Spas, grew a lot, I got connected with a hot tub manufacturer to start selling new hot tubs. In 2022, we launched Modtub as a new hot tub dealer, and to sum it up quickly, business did not go as planned. Around the time we first launched Modtub, I saw Plunge on Shark Tank. Seeing their product and knowing what I knew about hot tubs, I knew I could build something better. They have made insulated rotomolded hot tubs for years, and I have worked on many of them. Therefore, my mind immediately went to finding a large, insulated, rotomolded container to use for a cold plunge. We spent from May 2022 to Feb 2023 prototyping different coolers, pumps, chillers, fittings, etc. before we finally launched our cold plunge in February 2023.
Who do you mainly serve?
We are the perfect setup for people interested in cold water immersion who have tried some of the cheaper options like cold showers or tubs of ice, and they are ready for a permanent setup but balk at the $5k to $10k price point. Also, many of the other high end models have a sleek and luxurious look, but we have found our rugged, durable look resonates a lot with the cold plunging crowd. It is the perfect compliment to a garage gym with Rogue equipment all around it. The specific people groups we see use these are parents looking for more energy and patience, athletes for motivation and recovery, and anyone looking for good value to practice cold water immersion.

How many iterations did the first prototype go through?
That's hard to say where one iteration ended and the next began, but I think we've ordered every single fitting on the face of the earth. Our design looks simple, but we put in so much work getting it to that point. A few of the hardest things to figure out were how to make the chiller fittings work with flex PVC instead of vinyl tubing, where to find a long enough bulkhead, how to keep everything with good seals and no leaks, and how to package and ship these things across the country. I was the driving force behind the design, but my brother was the driving force behind the execution bringing this to market. Super fun to get build this with him, and we're loving the journey!

What's next?

We've been so blessed over the past year to build what we have, but the operation is likely more grassroots than anyone realizes. We're still a tiny team enjoying the ride.
